Chemotherapy is the most common medical treatment for cancer. Chemotherapy can be either injections or tablets. Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells (cancer cells). Chemotherapy can be used to shrink cancers before surgery or after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence. The temporary side effects of chemotherapy include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, oral ulcers and low blood counts.
